Beautiful book, but overwrought
I wanted to like this book, but I found it to be somewhat pretentious and hard to follow. Before the modern artists come into play, the book is much better and the author usually puts the art on the same page as the description of it. As the book gets into modern times, the author crams soooooooooooooooo many artists in that it is very difficult to read/understand/stay interested in it. I am a feminist senior with an excellent GPA and I was lost at times. Toward the second half, the art is not near the written descriptions, the author tries to describe art in words without photos and the author spends lots of time describing artists that are not shown in the book at all. I know that there may have been problems obtaining the rights to print some of the art that the author describes, but I found it frustating and distracting. Also, I'm sure that all the modern artists deserve recognition, but I felt that the sheer volume of names was overwhelming, especially when there was no visual to help cement the person in your mind. This is a visually beautiful book and is well written. I am going to keep it for reference. It is a good text book, but could use a little tweaking.

A Great Book, but Difficult to Follow
I really enjoyed this book, but I found it incredibly difficult to follow. The book does a fantastic job at highlighting women artists from the beginning all the way to contemporary art from the more well known ones to the lesser known ones. This book is divided nicely into time periods and does a great job with the information. However, some parts of the book are choppy. The author likes to reference other scholarly works without providing much information on them assuming that you have read them before. This is definitely a book for someone who has more than a basic knowledge of art, as some concepts aren't really explained in the book. Overall, the pros outweigh the cons on this book and it is a great resource for anyone wanting to know more about women artists throughout history.

School Textbook...Not Bad
Women, Art and History are not my favorite subjects, so when I saw a little of both crammed into a text book, I was less than excited. However, this book contains tons of information. The layout of the text is easy to follow and the small compact size makes it easy to tote around. I'd recommend this book for someone who wants a little more than the basics on Women, Art and History. This book is a great reference to use for research.

Excellent resource text!
Excellent text! As both a woman and art history student, I appreciated that this book provided excellent resource and insight on women artists and the social culture surrounding them and their works. Usually art history texts focus on male artists with a small spattering of women tossed in, so this book was really refreshing. All in all, a must have for art history enthusiasts.

be ready to be woke as heck. 19$ for an eye opening perspective of women (of different ethnicity) in the world of art history, where the notable artists (as linda nochlin would agree) are uncovered and written of their history in this textbook

Oh boy this is not easy reading...
This was a required text for a class I took this semester. The PRICE was great and I love how small the paperback copy I received was. The book itself does not really hold my attention at all and I would not buy it if I was not a student. Puts me right to sleep he he. The good news though is when you buy books from Amazon, you can usually sell them back for credit( which I will probably use for more textbooks next semester) toward your account.

Incredible Art History
A great book that details many of the artists that were left in the dark. Highly recommend this as it was part of an art history course!

A Challenge to Read
I cannot say I liked this book, just that it was too big with too much to read, unless one is an art historian! It was for a friend, and I knew it would overwhelm her. Like me she would probably only have looked at the pictures! Possibly too many black and white reproductions. I swapped it for an Andy Goldsworthy book.
