Dog MateLarge Fresh Water Drinking Fountain For Dogs And Cats

We have been using the large Dog Mate for about a month now. The cats like it and the dog likes it. The "waterfall' is such that it does not splash and the design in general is excellent. It is simple to disassemble for cleaning, the plastic is slightly flexible so there is no fear of it breaking when taking it apart, and the openings virtually guarantee that if the upper reservoir's "waterfall gate" somehow gets blocked, the water will overflow right back into the basin without flooding the floor. Even the pump is easily removed for cleaning, all without tools. It is so well thought out that it even assembles out of the box without tools. But..Two things to mentions. The first is that you should never clean it with anything abrasive as it will easily scratch the plastic material. If scale builds up I would recommend a natural, gentle descaler like a dilution of citric acid powder (sometimes sold as "sour salt") should be used.The other thing is their filter design. Even with two filters inserted (it is designed to hold two at once), they do not effectively filter out dust and fur because of the way they loosely fit into the base. With a big dog and three cats in our RV, and with the Dog Mate on a vinyl floor, we were having to clean the fur off the intake of the pump daily as the flow was dramatically reduced if we did not. The photo attached shows the solution.We bought a Marineland Bonded Filter Pad #PA0100 large aquarium filter material. I made a template and cut a number of filters which are 4" x 4½" in size. That's a dozen filters for about $4.50 (or about $.38 each) if you buy the pack here on Amazon. We discarded the original filters and slipped one of these into the slots where the original filters sat, allowing it to create a slight convex curve against the flow of the water.The filter in the photo was in place for over a week and the pump's flow never decreased. of course, this does not preclude the need to change the water in the Dog Mate regularly. You can see the light blue stripe of clean filter material where the pad was above the water line. I suppose this filter replacement could be washed in just hot water, but at $0.38 each I am not sure it is worth the effort. it certainly is a more effective solution that keeps the pump from clogging, they last longer, and do so at 1/6 the cost if you use two of the original filters at a time. That would be about $2 vs. $0.38!In conclusion, we have had a few other fountains which clogged easily and were a pain to clean. This one is easy to clean and with this filter solution we don't worry about clogging.

Excellent quality fountain. I got this after having a Dogit brand for a couple of years. It worked well enough but was harder to clean and fill, you could not see how clean it was or the water level without taking it apart, if the power failed the dogs had no water, and the pump was the lowest quality (and costs $30 to replace even though the entire fountain with the pump costs $20).This Dog Mate fountain has a higher quality pump and the unit has a retaining clip to ensure it is in the correct location, a long power cord with an inline disconnect, better filter, two drinking levels, multi speed pump, and is quieter and easier to clean. Plus it has the cool looking tiny waterfall and looks much classier.Minor cleaning every week or two takes about 90 seconds: remove the top part and wipe down and rinse the insides. Every month or two, use a rolled up paper towel or brush to clean the tube. Every few months or if it gets noisy, clean the impeller and housing inside the pump. I watched a video on how to clean a drinkwell fountain and it looked like a pain in the arse which is another reason I went with the dogmate.I love the large capacity, too. Lasts for days before refilling for my three small dogs.

My dog didn’t mind the change when I switched to this bowl. It’s quiet and simple to put together. Cleaning it is a slight hassle because of its shape.The biggest downside is the pump died just shy of 6 months. Replacement pumps are about half the cost of the bowl and pump together. I’m going to shop around for another bowl, possibly with a different style pump.

I bought this on a recommendation for an easy to clean pet fountain, and on those grounds, it certainly does its job well. Disassembly is easy and cleaning is simple so top marks there.The pump is absolute trash and will likely need to be replaced before the fountain is a year old. I'll probably get something aquarium rated to replace it when I can afford to do so. Similarly, the filters are a major disappointment. Their placement leaves gaps that hair and slime can slip through easily, gunking up the motor quickly. Not only that, but the filters use a surprising amount of hard plastic which cannot be recycled, which I find unacceptable in an item that has to be disposed of regularly. I will be getting a 3 stage water polishing kit and making my own filters once my supply runs out.For these reasons, I give the product 3 stars

avevo gia provarto la linea pert mate con la fontana piu piccola. ora avendo due gatti che bevono molto ho deciso di acquistare questa versione piu grande. contiene piu acqua e per questo svuotarla nel cambio dell'acqua diventa un pochino più pesante ma è molto più comoda da pulire molto più silenziosa e il flusso dell'acqua è perfetto. anche i miei gatti ne sono stati entusiastiraccomando anche per chi ha necessità di lasciare il gatto da solo pochi giorni

This product is only for use in the UK. It WILL NOT WORK IN CANADA as our electric grid runs at both a different voltage and a different frequency than the UK. Needless to say, it also lacks any of the Canadian government certifications to be legally sold in this country (Electrical Testing Lab (ETL), CSA, or ULC certification marks are required and this obviously has none of them). This information appears nowhere in the product description. Worst of all, this company has a NO RETURN POLICY. Someone at amazon.ca has accidentally ported over a popular UK product to amazon.ca without checking to see if it could legally be sold or even work here.
