Isaiah: God Saves Sinners (Preaching the Word)

I read a handful of commentaries on Isaiah and kept feeling like they were coming up short. It was hard to find someone consistent with the character of God, the people of Israel, and the church today. Dare I say, many felt legalistic and lacked the gospel that makes Isaiah so beautiful to read.When I realized one of my favorite teachers had their own commentary, I quickly ordered this book and opened to the intro as soon as it arrived. Couldn't put it down for the first 5 chapters. Even as I've finished this book, it still sits beside my Bible every morning, and I'll open it often and read a chapter I've already underlined and marked up substantially. I don't want to forget the wisdom and truth written in this, both within the book of Isaiah and Ortlund's commentary. I've also started his commentary on Proverbs and highly recommend it!Thank you, Pastor Ray. Your ministry and church have blessed and taught me beyond words, man!

Incredible! This commentary is both pastoral and scholarly. Ortlund approaches his reader like he is sitting down with his own child. He looks you dead in the eyes and lays out all your sin and brokenness with authentic love and concern. He then offers the great comfort and glory of Christ as the only way to true happiness and revival. As a pastor, this book came as a great comfort and I am so thankful I read it. As a follower of Jesus, this book increased my delight and affections for God. I am so bummed that I finished this great work but will return to it again and again.

Having done the background study with Alec Motyer and John Oswalt, Ortlund takes us on an enlightening journey into the Old Testament Prophetic Book of Isaiah. Ortlund doesn't worry us with a lot of the technical details of O.T prophetic interpretation (already done by Motyer and Oswalt), instead he opens with great insight the world and the message of Isaiah in a way that lets us see not only Isaiah and his times and message but we also are given insight into the messages' implications for today's church. It's here that Ortlund, in every chapter, gives us clear, impactful insight and applications for the message of Isaiah.If you are looking to see one pastors' excellent "preaching approach" to the Book of Isaiah, you couldn't do better than taking a look at Ray Ortlund's "Isaiah."

This book is more than your usual bible study aid. Written by Ray Ortlund,PhD, it is filled with the Gospel and offers a deep and quality commentary on Isaiah. If you want a serious review of this prophet's book, this needs to be on your bookshelf.An additional tip. BSF is introducing Isaiah as a new study nest year. Read this this summer for prepartaion for this study.

I never have done anything with Isaiah. Not the easiest book to understand. But with this commentary,it is a joy, a pleasure, and a time of discovery of the true message and meaning in a way that iseasy to understand and share. i would give it more stars if there were more available.

Outstanding! I've enjoyed most everything I have read from Ray Ortlund. This exposition of Isaiah is very good!

This is by far the best commentary on the book of Isaiah that I have read. It is readable enough for even a casual read but has the depth of a theological study. Christ-centered, Gospel focused and God glorifying. I highly recommend.

A definite five star rating for this devotional commentary. Ray Ortland's sweep through Isaiah is masterly. Every chapter is saturated with the gospel. A must have commentary for anyone wanting to get to grips with Isaiah. In every paragraph there is a tweetable quote. Recommend too for pastors considering preaching through Isaiah. It has certainly filled me with enthusiasm for preaching on this major prophet next year.

a current assessment cannot do this resource justice- i believe i will continue to refer to this book dvfor a long time to come. a sound investment, indeed!
